When God started speaking to me about the call to help the poor in Uganda my biggest fear was fundraising. In all the missions I had previously been involved, I was always able to pay my own way. But this mission was so large, there was no way I could do it on my own. It terrified me to ask people for money. I finally just gave in but I remember saying to “Papa, I don’t think this is going to work. If it doesn’t, it is your fault. But I will work as hard as I can and do my best.” In 2018, Papa raised $70,000. He is amazing, and I was astounded.
The one thing that keeps me striving forward is the thought of the poverty of the people in Mukono, Uganda. They have nothing. Their daily struggle is if they will have another meal or a drink of water each day. When I put all this into perspective, I just work that much harder.
My life right now is obsessed with two things. The first is taking care of my responsibilities at NuMark Buildings. The second is raising money for Mission Uganda.
I am told that letters are more effective than emails. So I have worked hard to mail out letters and donation cards. I also have a great deal of meetings. I will talk to anyone that will listen about Mission Uganda. I feel like my entire life is made up of telling the story and inviting—either to donate to the mission or to go with me to Uganda.
When I stuff and envelope, put on the address label, and put on the stamp, I then pray over the letter and ask “Holy” to touch this person’s heart.
It’s funny, I used to never look at the mail. Now, every day I pray that there will be a letter in the mail with a check in it. A common thing that you will hear at the Nunnikhoven house every night when we get home is, “did we get any checks in the mail or did we get skunked?”
When we get a return envelope it is so exciting to open it. We always praise and thank God for every check no matter what the amount.
The thing I have to always remember is this, it is God’s business. It was his idea. It is obeying His command. And most important, He has it all worked out.
The verse from the Bible that keeps me going is this:
“But life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus- the work of telling others the Good News Gods’ mighty kindness and love.” Acts 20:24
Feel free to donate to this wonderful cause. This money really will make a difference in changing a life and changing the world!
